Efavir

Uses
Efavir (Efavirenz) is typically prescribed to those with HIV to slow down the breakdown of their immune system. It is not a cure or prevention of further deterioration, but it does help to extend the function of the immune system.

It can be used on its own or combined with other medications. If in any doubt, speak to your doctor for further information.

Dosage and administration
Use Efavir according to your doctor's instruction only. Do not self medicate or change your doctor's instructions. Never double dose on Efavir (Efavirenz) to compensate for a missed doses.

Your doctor will usually instruct you to take this medicine on an empty stomach in the evening, and change your dosage after 2-4 weeks when your body would have had adjusted to the medication.

It is important to keep your prescription refilled as you need constant and consistent dosage in your system for best results.

Side effects
Tell your doctor promptly if you suffer from any of the side effects listed below when using Efavir (Efavirenz).

• Skin rash or itchiness
• Changes in mood
• Depression
• Abnormal pains
• Unusual change in urination

Precautions
Before using Efavir, discuss the following with your doctor: 

• Any allergies you may have
• If you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding
• If you are using any other medication, supplement, vitamins, or recreation drugs and narcotics
• If you follow any abnormal diet
• If you regularly smoke or consume alcohol
• If you have a medical history of drug or alcohol abuse, hepatitis B or C, any liver conditions, any mental health disorders, seizures, or any hyper-sensitivity related conditions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome
