Use This product is used to treat various stomach or esophagus problems related to excess stomach acid. Losec (Prilosec) turns off some of the millions of the "acid pumps" that are inside the lining of your stomach. When Losec (Prilosec) turns off "acid pumps," they cannot produce as much stomach acid. Once stomach acid is under control, there is less acid to "back up" into the esophagus. And in many patients, heartburn and other GERD symptoms are relieved.
Dosage Losec (Prilosec) works best if taken before eating. Antacids may be taken with Losec (Prilosec). The capsules are sustained-release and must be swallowed whole. Do not crush or chew them or the long action may be destroyed and the chance of side effects increased.
Side effects Losec (Prilosec) may cause diarrhea, constipation, stomach ache, nausea, gas, loss of appetite, headache or dizziness the first few days as your body adjusts to it. If these effects persist or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Unlikely but tell your doctor if you develop: back or joint pain, nervousness, sleep disturbances, cough, chest pain, unusual thirst, change in amount of urine, vision changes. Losec (Prilosec) may rarely cause loss of hair, ringing in the ears, swelling of stomach or fatigue. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions Before using Losec (Prilosec) tell your doctor your medical history especially:Liver or kidney disease, any drug allergies. Losec (Prilosec) should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if Losec (Prilosec) is excreted into breast milk. Because of the potential for adverse effects for the infant, breast-feeding is not recommended while taking Losec (Prilosec). Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor before breast-feeding. The elderly may be especially sensitive to Losec (Prilosec).
